Starting & Stopping the
Engine
(Range Skills Help) |

"FINE-C"
stands for:
(F) - fuel,
(I) -
ignition,
(N)
- neutral,
(E)
- engine cut off-switch,
(C)
- choke/clutch
These are the steps you need to take to start your motorcycle.
1. Turn on your Fuel Supply Valve.
2. Turn your ignition switch on. The ignition switch
should turn on.
3. Turn the transmission to neutral. Roll your bike to make sure
that it’s on neutral
and not in gear. Do
not always rely on the indicator lights, they could be wrong.
4. Turn on the Engine Cut off switch.
5. Turn the choke on to warm up your engine. Squeeze the clutch
lever so the engine
isn’t in gear.
Engine Stop Procedure:
1. Engine Cut Off / Off Ignition
2. Fuel Supply Valve
Note:
. Most motorcycles
will not start if the side kick stands have not been raised
. Some engines will not start unless the
clutch is squeezed
. These are safety mechanisms to prevent
injury
The Friction Zone
1. A very important concept and skill to learn
2. The friction zone is the area where the clutch lever allows and
gives power to the
engine.
3. The friction zone is the area between no power and full power to
the engine.
4. Proper use of the “friction zone” is critical in moving your
motorcycle from a
complete stop.
Riding Posture
1. Sit straight
2. Keep your head and eyes straight, watching the road ahead of you.
3. Keep both feet on the footrests.
Turning your Motorcycle
1. Slow down - Reduce your speed before a turn. Reduce your
throttle, brake as
necessary. Downshift
as necessary.
2. Turn - Turn your head to where your want your motorcycle
to go. Keep your head
up and level with the
horizon.
3. Press - Press forward on the handgrip in the direction you
want to go. This is
called “counter
steering”. Press left, lean left, go left. Press right, lean
right, go
right.
4. Roll - Roll on the throttle during the turn. Slow before
the turn and then increase
the throttle during the
turn. Maintaining or increasing your speed will improve your
control and stability.
Avoid deceleration or rapid acceleration.
5. Lean with the bike together. In tight turns, like a U-turn, use
the counter weight
technique, by leaning
your body toward the outside of the turn. Turn the
handlebars in the
direction of the turn for tighter turns.
Shifting
1. Match your engine speed with the road speed. Lower gears for
lower speeds and
higher gear for higher
speeds. Although today’s faster sport bikes are capable of
going upwards of 80mph
in 1st gear.
2. Shift to a higher gear to match the faster road speed. This will
improve overall
engine performance.
3. Shifting to higher gears - Ease off on your throttle (right
hand). Squeeze your
clutch (left hand).
Lift the shift lever (left foot). Ease off on your clutch (left
hand)
so the new gear can be
“caught”.
4. Shifting to lower gears - Ease off on your throttle (right
hand). Squeeze your clutch
(left hand). Press
down on your shift lever (left foot).
5. Downshifting has a similar effect to braking. It will slow down
your engine.
6. You usually shift down or up one gear at a time. But it is
possible to shift up or
down more than 1 gear
at a time.
Stopping
1. It’s best to slow down or stop your
motorcycle using both brakes, front and rear.
Get in the good habit of using both your right hand and right foot
concurrently to
“most efficiently” stop
your motorcycle.
2. Braking, using both brakes will give you the best results.
