  Guidelines to Choosing Motorcycle
Apparel & Protective Gear

Personal Protective Gear (Footwear, Gloves, Jackets, Pants & Suits)

Footwear

1. Over the ankle leather boots provide excellent protection from small objects that may
fly up and hit your feet.

2. Over the ankle boots also provide protection from hot motorcycle exhaust pipes.

3. In the event of a crash, your boot should help protect your feet from impact as well
    as unnatural bends.

Gloves

1. Full fingered gloves provide protection from the wind, sun, wind and the cold.

2. Motorcycle gloves are best as they are contoured to fit over your bike handgrips.

3. Motorcycle gloves have seems on the outside to reduce irritation.

4. Motorcycle gloves should provide good impact and skid resistance.  Look for armor
    and quality leather materials.

5. Avoid bulky gloves.  They will prevent you from properly riding your bike.

6. Look to wear lighter gloves in the summer and heavier, thicker gloves in the winter.
Use common sense that dictates your season, weather and environment.

Motorcycle Jackets, Pants and Riding Suits.

1. A quality, comfortable jacket will not only protect you during a crash but also keep
your mind off the jacket as a form of distraction due to discomfort.

2. Motorcycle jackets are cut longer in the sleeve, legs and fuller across the shoulders.

3. Fasteners and flaps should seal off the wind and debris.

4. Riding suits are available in one piece and 2 piece sets.

5. Leather is a good material choice.

6. Avoid wearing wide flared pants, flowing scarves, and anything that can entangle
    itself onto the motorcycle.

7. Protective gear should be comfortable without being binding.

8. Jackets with a zippered front is superior over a jacket with buttons or snaps.

9. Choose a jacket that has an extra flap over your zipper.  This provides extra wind
protection and may also prevent unnecessary scratches to your bike.

10. Look for jackets with snug cuffs and  and waists.  This prevents wind from getting in.

11. Avoid a large loose collar when riding.  It may flap and really irritate you during a
     ride.

12. Avoid hypothermia, (ie. a condition of subnormal body temperature).  Even in the
summer, due to wind factors, you may feel colder than normal.

13. Hypothermia can cause loss of concentration, slowed reactions and loss of smooth
     precise, muscle movement.

14. Wear a wind proof jacket or an added layer of clothing underneath if necessary.

15. Learn to dress in “layers” so that you can add or remove clothing as necessary.

16. Top off your layers with a wind proof jacket or outer layer.

17. Try to wear bright colors.  Inexpensive bright vests is also a good idea..  Reflective
tape is also a good consideration.

Rain Suits

1. If you must ride in the rain.  Then you must wear a motorcycle rain suit.

2. One and two piece suits are available.

3. Choose a high visibility color like orange or yellow.

4. Look for elastics in the waist, pants legs and sleeves.

5. The jacket should have a high color and zip up with wide flaps across the opening.

6. To off your rain suit with water proof gloves and boot covers
